چکیده

The fluorescence spectrum of crystals grown from newly synthesized 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN), measured from 25 down to )112 C, consists of a single emission band originating from a locally excited (LE) state. The fluorescence decay of the DMABN crystals is single exponential at all temperatures investigated. These results show that intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) does not occur in crystalline DMABN. The additional red-shifted emission bands and multiexponential fluorescence decays previously reported for DMABN crystals are attributed to a minor amount of the impurity 4-(dimethylamino)benzaldehyde, the synthetic precursor of commercial DMABN. 2003 Elsevier B.V. Two-State Intramolecular Charge Transfer (ICT) with 3,5-Dimethyl-4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (MMD) and Its Meta-Isomer mMMD. Ground State Amino Twist Not Essential for ICT.

From X-ray structure analysis, amino twist angles of 90.0° for 2,4-dimethyl-3-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (mMMD), 82.7° for 4-(di-tert-butylamino)benzonitrile (DTABN), and 88.7° for 6-cyanobenzoquinuclidine (CBQ) are determined, all considerably larger than the 57.4° of 3,5-dimethyl-4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (MMD). This large twist leads to lengthening of the amino-phenyl bond, 143.5 pm (mM...

Intramolecular charge transfer and dual fluorescence of 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile: ultrafast branching followed by a two-fold decay mechanism.

In this contribution we present new experimental and theoretical results for the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) reaction underlying the dual fluorescence of 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN), which indicate that the fully twisted ICT (TICT) state is responsible for the time-resolved transient absorption spectrum while a distinct partially twisted ICT (pTICT) structure is suggested for...

Intramolecular charge transfer of 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile probed by time-resolved fluorescence and transient absorption: No evidence for two ICT states and a pisigma( *) reaction intermediate.

For the double exponential fluorescence decays of the locally excited (LE) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) states of 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN) in acetonitrile (MeCN) the same times tau(1) and tau(2) are observed. This means that the reversible LE<==>ICT reaction, starting from the initially excited LE state, can be adequately described by a two state mechanism. The most imp...

Presence and absence of excited state intramolecular charge transfer with the six isomers of dicyano-N,N-dimethylaniline and dicyano-(N-methyl-N-isopropyl)aniline.

The excited state behavior of the six m,n-dicyano-N,N-dimethylanilines (mnDCDMA) and m,n-dicyano-(N-methyl-N-isopropyl)anilines (mnDCMIA) is discussed as a function of solvent polarity and temperature. The dicyano moiety in these electron donor (D)/acceptor (A) molecules has a considerably larger electron affinity than the benzonitrile subgroup in 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile (DMABN). Neverthe...

Effects of iptycene scaffolds on the photoluminescence of N,N-dimethylaminobenzonitrile and its analogues.

To understand the effect of iptycene scaffolds on the locally excited (LE) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) fluorescence of aminobenzonitriles, a series of triptycene and pentiptycene derivatives were synthesized and their molecular structures and photophysical properties were characterized and compared with the parent phenylene systems, 4-(N-methylamino)benzonitrile (MABN), 4-(N,N-dime...
